What Is Android Auto? What Phones And Cars Are Compatible?

Are you familiar with Android Auto? In this blog post, I will tell you everything you need to know about it and what cars are compatible.

What Is Android Auto

In general, car manufacturers prefer if the people who buy their cars use the native information software that’s built into the cars.

However, there are rival tech companies such as Google and Apple who offer alternative solutions that are better and more user-friendly in some cases. Google’s infotainment standard is known as Android Auto.

What Is Android Auto?

Android Auto is a mobile app that was developed by Google to mimic features from a smartphone to a car’s in-dash entertainment head unit.

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety and Google, the main purpose of this app is to make driving safer by reducing distractions.

This is very similar to Apple CarPlay, which was made primarily to encourage drivers to keep their hands on the steering wheel and their eyes on the road.

Why Should You Use Android Auto?

Why Should You Use Android Auto?

You should use Android Auto because it takes quite a few of the smartphone features that you enjoy using and puts them into your car’s dashboard.

The information is displayed in a very user-friendly user interface that has large icons and menus.

This software is updated from time to time to add new features and functionalities to keep the users interested.

One of the main selling points for Android Auto is the Google Maps navigation system that it features.

This is a navigation system that will give you simple step-by-step directions to get you where you need to go and if it detects severe traffic it will find you an alternate route.

Android Auto will also import addresses that are saved in your phone so you will not have to manually type in the address of the places you frequently drive to.

Additionally, the app also gives you on-demand access to a wide variety of podcasts and songs.

You also have the ability to surf the web, send and receive text messages, and make and receive phone calls. When you’re having a conversation on the phone you will hear the other person via the speakerphone or the car’s speakers.

All of these features respond to basic voice commands as well. You can say “OK, Google, call John Doe” to make a phone call, or “OK, Google, where was Abraham Lincoln born?” And Google will assist you.

With voice commands, you have the ability to respond to messages using speech to text technology.

However, if your car does not have voice-recognition technology, all of Android Auto’s features can be easily accessed via the touchscreen in your car.

But this is not ideal because you have to take one of your hands off the wheel to do this.

You must be aware that the display screen on your smartphone will be locked while you’re using Android Auto and you will not be able to use your phone.

The integration of the Google Assistant working in conjunction with intelligent voice controls will make it easier for you to keep your hands on the wheel.

There is a number of third-party apps that work with Android Auto including, WhatsApp, iHeart Radio, Pandora, Spotify, and Waze.

But vehicle settings are not part of Android Auto, so if you would like to modify the climate controls settings, select a different driving mode, or change the radio station, you must exit the app first.

  1. Hi,
I have an AT&T moto g play phone with Android version 11 and a 2019 Chevy Equinox, but we can’t get them to work with Android Auto. They just replaced the radio and that didn’t fix the problem for me. The tech could connect his phone. Any suggestions?
