Samsung Galaxy A50 Camera

The Samsung Galaxy A50 comes equipped with a triple-camera setup located at the back of the phone.

The cameras in the triple-camera setup consist of a 25-megapixel primary camera with an ƒ/1.7 aperture, an 8-megapixel ultrawide camera with an ƒ/2.2 aperture, and a 5-megapixel depth-sensing camera.

The selfie camera located at the front of the phone is a 25-megapixel camera. The camera app is a bit slow when it’s launched and sometimes there’s a bit of a lag with the shutter.

However, the photo quality is good and the High Dynamic Range (HDR) on this phone is impressive.

It makes it possible for this phone to take good photos in high contrast scenarios.

The photos are sharp with quite a bit of detail, the colors are rich and vibrant, and the wide-angle camera gives you the ability to fit more subjects into the photos.

The Camera Struggles Under Certain Conditions:

This camera does not have optical image stabilization so it’s difficult to get great photos of a subject that’s moving.

And you must try to remain still and make sure you do not shake your hands. If you’re moving or you shake your hands when taking a photo this will negatively affect the quality of the photo.

The Samsung Galaxy A50 performs well when taking photos in a well lit setting. However, its low light performance is not as good as that of the Pixel 3A with its A.I. assisted Night Sight mode.

When taking photos with the wide-angle camera the photo quality is not very good. The photos are distorted, and the camera struggles even more in a darker setting.

The third camera is a depth-sensing camera which only works when shooting photos in portrait mode (Samsung refers to this as Live Focus).

When taking photos in a well-lit setting, the Bokeh effect around the subject looks good but in a darker setting, it struggles a bit.

The cameras on this phone struggle when taking photos in low-light conditions because the HDR feature is a bit too aggressive. This results in colors which look a bit unnatural.

The cameras on the Pixel 3A takes better photos in different conditions in comparison to the Samsung Galaxy A50.

The 25-megapixel selfie camera has an ƒ/2.0 aperture and it takes good selfies, even with the Live Focus mode.

The cameras on this phone are relatively good for a mid-range phone, but they are not the best.

Performance:

This phone comes with the Exynos 9610 processor, this is a bit uncommon for Samsung to do this.

Most of Samsung’s phones which have been sold in North America have the Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

Nevertheless, the Exynos 9610 is a mid-range processor that is comparable to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 processor in the Pixel 3A.

On paper, both phones appear to be evenly matched and the Samsung Galaxy A50 provides a good user experience.

However, when multitasking on this phone it has a tendency to slow down a little bit this is somewhat common on mid-range phones.

Battery Life:

I think it was a great idea for Samsung to put a 4,000mAh battery in this phone. This battery is capable of 15-watt power delivery if you’re using the stock adapter.

With a massive 4,000mAh battery, the battery life on this phone is not bad at all.

This battery will last for one day of moderate use on a single charge, that’s great for a mid-range phone.

This phone has fast charging capabilities and the battery charges relatively fast via the USB Type C port.

However, this phone does not have wireless charging capabilities. But then again this feature isn’t offered on any of the other phones on the market in this price range.

Software:

This phone runs on the Samsung One UI operating system on top of Android 9.0 pie. The icons are large and some things have been moved around.

The on-screen controls and text are now located at the bottom of the display screen. This makes sense because it’s easier to reach these buttons there on a phone such as this one with a large display screen.

This phone also features the Samsung gesture navigation system which is present on the premium Samsung Galaxy phones.

The Samsung gesture navigation system gives you the ability to do different hand gestures to access certain features on the phone.

Some people like the gesture navigation system while others don’t, to each their own.

It’s likely that the Samsung Galaxy A50 will receive the Android Q operating system sometime next year.

Samsung does not have a reputation for updating their phones in a speedy manner and due to this phone being a mid-range phone it will probably be updated sometime after the premium Samsung phones. That’s not a deal-breaker by any means.

But if it’s important for you to have a phone with the latest operating system that’s updated in a timely manner then you should know that Google stated that the Pixel 3A will be supported with three years of Android platform support.

Google does a great job of updating their operating systems in a timely manner.

My Final Thought:

The Samsung Galaxy A50 is a good mid-range phone with decent overall performance. It’s great that Samsung put so much effort into a mid-range phone.

While we all love the premium Samsung phones in the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note lines, these phones are very expensive and the prices have been rising every year.

As a result of this, many smartphone users who have premium phones have been holding on to their phones for a longer period of time.

However, there are many people who can’t afford the premium phones. Thus the reason why smartphone manufacturers started making these mid-range phones for people who are on a budget. You can take a look at the Samsung Galaxy A50 on eBay.

The Samsung Galaxy A50 is a great phone, but if you’re looking for a mid-range phone with better overall performance then I would suggest the Pixel 3A.
