OnePlus Nord Design:

Even though the OnePlus Nord is a mid-range phone it has a premium look and feel to it which is reminiscent of the OnePlus 8 phones.

This phone has Corning Gorilla Glass on the front and back, sandwiched between the glass is a metal chassis.

Thus the reason why the OnePlus Nord has a premium look and feel to it. The display screen on the OnePlus Nord is slightly smaller than that of the OnePlus 8.

This makes it easier to handle in one hand than that of its larger predecessors. The OnePlus Nord is an attractive phone which has thin bezels.

The dimensions of this phone are 158.3 x 73.3 x 8.2mm and it weighs 184g. So it’s slightly shorter than that of the OnePlus 8 but it’s heavier, thicker, and wider.

Due to the fact that there is glass on the front and back of the phone, this makes it slippery sometimes so you must be careful when handling this phone.

Nevertheless, when you buy the OnePlus Nord, a slimline silicone case is included in the box.

This makes it easier to hold on to the phone while providing a layer of protection in the event of an accidental drop.

Located on the right edge of the phone you will find the power/lock button. Directly below this button is the alert slider which gives you the ability to easily switch between the loud, silent, and vibrate modes.

On the left edge of the phone is the volume rocker, on the bottom edge you will find a dual SIM port, a speaker, and a USB-C port.

However, the OnePlus Nord does not have a 3.5mm headphone jack. The speaker at the bottom edge of the phone is only for external audio output, so there are no stereo speakers.

As a result of this, you may not get the immersive experience that you will get while playing video games or watching movies on a phone that has stereo speakers.

There are two color variants to this phone, there’s the Blue Marble and the Gray Onyx.

Even though this phone does not have an official IP rating, OnePlus claims that it is water-resistant.

OnePlus claims that the OnePlus Nord can be submerged into 30cm of water for up to 30 minutes without having any adverse effects.

There’s a possibility that this may be true, however, you should be cautious about doing this.

On the back panel of the phone, you will find a vertical camera bump which houses a quad-camera setup.

The camera bump isn’t huge and unlike the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 pro, the camera bump is located on the left side of the phone, rather than the middle.

Display Screen:

OnePlus Nord Display ScreenThe OnePlus Nord comes equipped with a 6.44-inch AMOLED display screen with an aspect ratio of 20:9.

It’s a Full HD+ display screen with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 resolution which has a 90Hz refresh rate that will ensure an extremely smooth scrolling experience.

In the upper left corner of the display screen is a punch-hole cutout which houses the dual selfie cameras.

Nevertheless, this phone has thin bezels so the display screen occupies the majority of space at the front of the phone.

The selfie cameras are not intrusive, however, the number of notification icons that appear in the top bar has been reduced due to the placement of the selfie cameras.

The phone comes with a screen protector which will protect the display screen from scratches.

The screen protector creates a small seam around the display screen. However, you can easily remove it if you dislike it, all you have to do is peel it off.

The display screen has flat edges unlike the curved edges on the phones in the OnePlus 8 series.

Nevertheless, this is a bright display screen with a maximum brightness of 1,000 nits so it’s easy to see it in direct sunlight.

The OnePlus Nord supports HDR10+ content, so if you enjoy watching HDR videos they will look great on this display screen.

However, when playing video games or watching videos, the small portion of the display screen that houses the notification bar and the selfie cameras is not used.

I think this was a great decision by OnePlus because this will prevent the punch-hole from negatively affecting the viewing experience.

This is an attractive display screen that provides a great user experience. However, the colors are not as rich and vibrant as they are on some of the other phones that are currently on the market.

An optical fingerprint scanner is embedded in the display screen, this provides a layer of security which gives you the ability to unlock the phone via your fingerprint.

The OnePlus Nord gives you the ability to register multiple fingerprints. This fingerprint scanner gets the job done but it’s not the fastest fingerprint scanner on the market by any means.

There is also a facial recognition system that allows you to unlock the phone with your face. OnePlus gives you the ability to combine the fingerprint recognition with the facial recognition, this makes it possible to unlock the phone a bit faster.

OnePlus Nord Cameras

The OnePlus Nord comes equipped with six cameras, there are two cameras on the front and four at the back.

This is the most cameras that OnePlus has ever placed on a phone. The primary camera at the back of the phone is the same 48MP Sony IMX586 camera that’s present on the OnePlus 8.

This camera comes with EIS and OIS image stabilization and it features an f/1.57 aperture. By default, this camera is set to 12MP but it is capable of taking 48MP photos.

This is due to the fact that the 48MP photos are approximately 3 times the size of the 12MP photos. As a result of this, the internal storage in the phone will fill up much faster if you’re only taking high-resolution 48MP photos.

For the average smartphone user, the 12MP photos will be sufficient, however, if you would like to print the photo, then I would recommend shooting the 48MP photos.

The other cameras at the back of the phone consist of a 5MP depth-sensing camera, a 2MP macro camera, and an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera which has a 119-degree field of view which will enable you to take some great landscape photos.

There are a number of shooting modes to choose from including, Landscape Mode, Portrait Mode, Super Macro Mode, Nightscape Mode, Pro Mode, and Full HD Mode.

You also have the ability to capture slow-motion video at 240fps as well as 4K videos at 30fps. The primary camera takes good photos in a well-lit setting, the photos taken in a darker setting are not horrible by any means but they are not as sharp.

The Auto HDR feature prevents overexposure and it also prevents photos taken in a darker setting from appearing too dark.

There’s a 2x zoom feature that enables you to get closer to the subject while maintaining the structural integrity of the photo.

This feature produces the best results when used outside in direct sunlight. When using the 2X zoom feature indoors, or in less than ideal lighting conditions, you may get a little noise in the photos.

The zoom feature gives you the ability to zoom all the way up to 10x digital zoom. But I would not recommend doing this because the photo quality is drastically reduced.

The 2x zoom icon is located close to two other toggles, one of the toggles takes you to the main camera, while the other changes the camera to the 8MP ultra-wide camera.

It’s great to have all these options, however, the quality of the photos taken with the ultra-wide camera is not bad, however, they are not comparable to that of the primary camera.

Photos taken with the ultra-wide-camera are not sharp and they lack detail, in general, ultra-wide photos have a tendency of having distorted edges.

But photos taken with this ultra-wide camera has less distortion in comparison to that of some of the other phones that are currently on the market today.

This is due to OnePlus’s image-processing improvements, the OnePlus Nord has a Night Mode as well.

OnePlus refers to its Night Mode feature as Nightscape Mode. This is something that has become more common on flagship phones and mid-range phones within the past year.

When shooting photos in Nightscape Mode the camera takes nine photos at various light levels, then all these photos are combined into one photo, the end result is a brighter photo.

When shooting photos in Nightscape Mode, it’s very important that you do not shake the phone, you must hold it steady to acquire the best results.

It takes roughly 8 seconds for the camera to capture the photos at all levels. If your hand shakes while the photos are being shot, you will have a low-quality photo.

Photos that are shot correctly in Nightscape Mode are decent. However, the results you get will depend on the lighting conditions, for example, if you take a photo in a darker setting that has some light, you will most likely get a good photo.

But if you take a photo in a darker setting where there is less light present, the photo quality will not be very good, Nightscape Mode struggles to perform under these conditions.

Portrait Mode on the OnePlus Nord is another great Mode you can use. Portrait Mode uses the primary camera in conjunction with the 5MP depth-sensing camera to capture the subject while blurring the background.

The subject looks sharp, and the overall quality of the photo is good. However, photos shot in Portrait Mode are slightly darker than that of the photos taken in the standard camera mode.

The OnePlus Nord features a Macro Mode which gives you the ability to zoom in on a subject via the 2MP macro camera.

However, the Macro Mode is not a separate Mode, it’s built into the camera settings, it’s located at the top of the display screen.

I think it was a bad decision on the part of OnePlus to put a 2MP macro camera on the OnePlus Nord.

However, I understand that sacrifices like this were necessary to be able to sell the phone at a more affordable price.

Due to the macro camera’s low resolution, the quality of the photos taken using this camera mode is not very good.

You can achieve better results by using the default camera mode when shooting photos at close range.

In the camera app, there is a wide variety of filters that you can choose from. If you are someone who enjoys using filters then you will appreciate this.

Located at the front of the phone you will find a 32MP camera with an f/2.45 aperture along with an 8MP, 105-degree ultra-wide camera.

The ultra-wide-camera gives you the ability to fit more subjects into your selfies.

The OnePlus Nord comes equipped with a quick-share function that’s built-in to the camera app, this feature gives you the ability to quickly and easily share your photos on your favorite social media platforms.

The cameras on the OnePlus Nord offer quite a bit of versatility but they have their pros and cons.

Nevertheless, when taking photos in a well-lit setting with the default camera mode the photo quality is good.

Battery Life:

The OnePlus Nord comes equipped with a 4,115mAh battery, this is a big battery on average it will last for a little over one day of moderate use on a single charge.

The battery capacity of the OnePlus Nord is slightly lower than that of the OnePlus 8. However, the battery life on both phones is about the same.

This is due to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 processor that powers the OnePlus Nord. This phone comes with the same 30W Warp charger that comes with the OnePlus 8.

This fast charger charges the phone from 0 to 60 percent in 30 minutes, and it fully charges the phone in a little under 70 minutes. This is good but it’s not the fastest charger by any means.

Hardware And Software:

OnePlus HardwareThe OnePlus Nord features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor, even though it’s not the same processor that powers the OnePlus 8, it performs well in the OnePlus Nord.

When it comes to RAM, there are 2 variants to choose from, the 8GB and 12GB variants.

The 8GB variant comes with 128GB of internal storage and the 12GB variant comes with 256GB of internal storage, the OnePlus Nord does not have a microSD card slot so there’s no expandable storage.

Nevertheless, this is a fast and responsive phone that performs well when multitasking. Whether you enjoy watching videos, playing video games, or surfing the net, etc. The OnePlus Nord can get the job done.

The OnePlus Nord has a Fanatic Mode, this is a Mode that was made for people who enjoy playing video games on their phone.

Fanatic Mode enables the phone to direct more power to enhance your gaming experience, the “do not disturb” feature is automatically switched on in this mode so your notifications will not appear on the display screen to ruin your gaming experience.

The OnePlus Nord runs on the Oxygen Operating System 10.5, this is the latest OnePlus Operating System which sits on top of Android 10.

The 90Hz refresh rate provides a smooth scrolling experience when using the phone.

However, you have the ability to reduce the refresh rate to 60Hz, doing this will slightly extend the phone’s battery life but things will not be as smooth.

The OnePlus Nord is a powerful mid-range phone but it does not have as much power as the OnePlus 8 or the OnePlus 8 pro because these phone feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor.

The UI on the OnePlus Nord provides a wide variety of customization options. The OnePlus Nord provides a clean user experience that’s similar to that of stock Android, however, it provides more customization options.

5G Capabilities:

People who are excited about 5G will be glad to know that the OnePlus Nord supports 5G. So you will be able to get the most out of 5G when it arrives in your area.

This is one of the most economical 5G phones that is currently on the market. With the OnePlus Nord, you get three years of security updates, and two years of Android updates.

My Final Thought:

The OnePlus Nord is a powerful mid-range phone, with lots of nice features. This is a fast, responsive phone that performs well in many areas.

This phone has a big beautiful display screen with a 90Hz refresh rate, six cameras with a wide variety of camera modes to choose from, as well as 5G capabilities.

So if you’re looking for a decent mid-range phone that doesn’t break the bank, you should consider getting the OnePlus Nord, you can take a look at it on eBay.
