Motorola Telecommunications Company (The History)
Motorola was an American telecommunications company that was founded by Joseph and Paul Galvin in 1928. In this blog post, I will give you a brief history of the Motorola Telecommunications Company.
The First Product:
The company was originally named Galvin Manufacturing Corporation. The first product that was produced by this company was a battery eliminator.
This was a device that converted direct current to alternating current. This made it possible for battery-powered radios to function via household electricity.
This company had been working on radio communication devices long before the advent of the cell phone.
The Introduction Of Two-Way Radio:
In 1940, the company introduced a pair of two-way radio communication devices for the U.S. military and police personnel.
In 1947, the name of the company was officially changed from Galvin Manufacturing Corporation to Motorola.
In 1962, Motorola began to supply radio communications devices for the unmanned Mariner and the manned Gemini space programs.
Motorola’s transponder was used in America’s first Moon exploration mission in 1969, Apollo.
Neil Armstrong’s message from the moon was sent on a Motorola device.
Other than radio communication devices, Motorola also made wireless network equipment as well as home and broadcast network products.
Some of these products included:
- Set-top boxes
- Digital video recorders
- High-definition television
Motorola’s wireless telephone division played an important role in the development of cellular phones.
The Introduction Of The Flip Phone:
The company developed the concept of mobile phones, clam phones, and flip phones in the mid-1990s.
Motorola was among the first company to build smartphones that featured Google’s open-source Android mobile operating system.
The Motorola Droid which was released on November 2, 2009, was the first phone with the Android OS.
Shortly thereafter in 2011, Motorola was divided into two independent public entities, Motorola Solutions, and Motorola Mobility.
The First U.S. Broadband LTE Public Safety Network:
In 2011 Motorola Solutions was awarded a contract by the State of Mississippi to create the first statewide broadband LTE public safety network in the U.S.
Motorola Mobility which included the handset division was sold to Google in 2012. In 2014, Chinese technology company Lenovo purchased Motorola Mobility from Google for $2.91 billion dollars.
Google retained majority ownership of the Motorola Mobility patent portfolio as part of the deal and Lenovo received a license to the portfolio of patents and other intellectual property.
The Motorola Telecommunications Company was a pioneer in the telecommunications industry and the company played a crucial role in the development of the smartphone industry that we have today.
