iPhone XS Max Review – A Phone With An Attractive Display

iPhone XS Max Hardware:

The XS Max is available in Gold, Silver, and Space Grey and there are three different variants which include the 64GB, 256GB, and 512GB variants.

The dimensions are 157.5  x  77.4  x  7.7 mm HWD and the phone weighs 7.34 ounces. The display screen is a Super Retina HD OLED Multi-Touch display screen.

The display screen is 6.5 inches and the resolution is 2688 x 1242 pixels at 458 ppi it has a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and it features Apple’s True Tone technology as well as 3D Touch.

The XS Max is rated IP68 which means that it’s dust, splash, and water resistant. The phone can be submerged in 2 meters of water for up to 30 minutes without having any adverse effects.

There is an A12 Bionic chip and a Next-generation Neural Engine inside the phone.

The XS Max has a dual camera setup, both cameras are 12-megapixel cameras. However, one camera is a wide-angle camera which has a f/1.8 aperture and the other camera is a telephoto camera which has a f/2.4 aperture.

The dual camera setup has 2x optical zoom along with digital zoom up to 10x. The Portrait mode feature has an advanced Bokeh feature and depth control.

Portrait lighting has five effects which are: Studio, Stage, Contour, Stage Mono, and Natural. Dual optical image stabilization is available.

There are six element lens, and there is a Quad-LED True Tone flash which has Slow Sync. Smart HDR for photos is available.

Located at the front of the phone you will find the TrueDepth camera which is a 7-Megapixel camera with a f/2.2 aperture, there’s Portrait mode with advanced bokeh and Depth Control.

The TrueDepth camera also has Animoji and Memoji, it records 1080p HD video at 30 fps or 60 fps. There’s Smart HDR for photos as well as extended dynamic range for video at 30 fps.

Cinematic video stabilization is available at 1080p and 720p. There’s a wide color capture for photos and live photos. There is also auto image stabilization, burst mode, exposure control and more.

When you’re shopping Apple Pay gives you the ability to pay with your iPhone via the Face ID feature. You can receive and send money in messages as well as complete purchases made via Apple Pay on your Mac.

The 3.5mm Lightning headphone jack dongle is not included with this phone. So you will have to spend additional money to get this at the Apple Store.

The XS Max is an expensive phone so I’m not sure why this is being sold separately, it should be included with the phone.

Battery Life:

The XS Max comes with a 3,174mAh battery, that’s the biggest battery that Apple has ever put into an iPhone. The battery will get you through one full day of moderate to high usage, roughly 11 hours.

This phone has wireless charging capabilities, and it will charge a little faster than its predecessors. This is due to the fact that it has a tighter coil design.

However, it will take roughly two hours or more to go from 0 to 100 percent depending on the wireless charger that you use.

The XS Max has fast wired charging capabilities. However, you will have to spend additional money to purchase the cable separately.

I’m a bit disappointed because this should have been included in the box.

Shortly after this phone was released, some users noticed a glitch in their phones. This glitch prevented the users from charging the XS and XS Max over a wired connection until the display screen was awakened.

However, Apple recently released iOS 12.0.1 update which fixed this glitch. Hopefully, all the devices that were affected by this glitch will be fixed upon updating the OS.

My Final Thought:

The iPhone XS Max is an attractive premium phone, it’s a big phone with a big attractive display screen which has an amazing camera. This phone is fast and responsive, but it’s not for everyone.

If you would like to have a phone that you can easily manage in one hand which fits nicely into your pocket. This may not be the phone for you. You would be better off getting the iPhone XS instead.
