Apple released the brand new iPhone 12 in the 4th quarter of 2020, at this point, I think we’ve all seen an iPhone before.

iPhone 12 Introduction:
To me, it seems as though this iPhone has a very familiar look and feel to it. I say this because we’ve all seen the rounded corners, the notch, and the lightning port.
However, there are a couple of key changes on this iPhone that distinguishes it from its predecessors.
But if you’re thinking about buying the iPhone 12, there are some things you should know before making your final decision.
The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro are very similar, they are exactly the same size so an iPhone case that works for one will also work for the other.
The main cameras are almost the same both iPhones have the same display screen, the same battery, and the same charging.
However, there are a couple of things that only apply to the pro version and I will tell you what they are later on in this review.
The iPhone 12 has a flat design, and this iPhone is a little thinner and lighter than that of its predecessor from last year.
The iPhone definitely has a premium look and feel to it, the power button is a little bit bigger and this iPhone has an IP68 water and dust resistance rating.
There is also a 5G antenna cut out on the right-hand side in some regions where the iPhone 12 is available.
The flat design makes it easier to hold on to the iPhone when you’re handling it. All the iPhones in the iPhone 12 series have a ceramic shield, this is a more durable type of glass that has a crystal structure inside of it.
The ceramic shield is located at the front of the iPhone, it covers the display screen. Apple claims that it offers four times better drop protection, I haven’t tested this, but I hope it’s true.
However, I think a phone’s ability to survive an accidental drop with minimal damage depends on the way it’s dropped, but nevertheless, you can always use a screen protector for some additional protection if you have concerns about the durability of the display screen.
Wireless Charging Via MagSafe:
All the iPhones in the iPhone 12 series have an external hardware feature called MagSafe.
MagSafe is an exclusive magnetically-attached wireless power transfer and accessory-attachment standard that was originally used on the Mac series of notebooks.
MagSafe is a magnetic charging accessory that is located at the back of the iPhone directly behind the Apple logo, this makes it possible for wireless charging.
So the number one MagSafe accessory that Apple sells is the puck charger. It doesn’t come with a charging brick.
So if you buy the puck charger for $40 make sure you have a USB-C charging brick, it attaches to the back of the iPhone, all you have to do is line it up with the magnets.
This charges at 15 watts, while every other wireless charger on the iPhone, still charges at seven and a half watts.
This is still qi charging, so you can still charge the iPhone 12 with other wireless chargers and you can charge other phones with the MagSafe puck if you would like to do so.
When using MagSafe, I noticed that it leaves marks on the iPhone, however, I don’t think it’ll turn out to be a long-term problem because I can wipe it off easily every time.
I feel as though, Apple has probably tested it many times before adding this feature to the iPhone so they know it will not be an issue.
You can MagSafe charge through most non-MagSafe cases as long as they’re thin enough and the magnet will still work through some thin cases.
I think it’s great that Apple provides a wireless charging solution for the iPhone. So it seems as though Apple wants to get rid of the charging port on the iPhone and go totally wireless charging at some point in the future.
When this happens people who use wallet cases will not be able to wirelessly charge their iPhone. So apple must invent a convenient way for these people to charge their iPhone.
One of the main selling points for the iPhone 12 is the display screen that it possesses. This iPhone comes with a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR Oled display screen with a resolution of 2532 x 1170 pixel, 460 PPI, and a 60Hz refresh rate.
The display screen is protected by the new Ceramic Shield glass which is made by Corning and it’s completely flat. All of the iPhones in the iPhone 12 series have OLED display screens even the iPhone 12 mini which is the cheapest one.
The dimensions of the display screen on the iPhone 12 are very similar to that of last year’s iPhone 11.
This new Super Retina XDR OLED display screen supports HDR10 and Dolby Vision content. Just like the predecessors to the iPhone 12, the iPhone 12 also comes with True Tone technology.
This iPhone supports a wide color gamut and the Taptic Engine under the display screen makes the Haptic Touch feature possible.
This year, Apple was rumored to introduce 120Hz display screens called ProMotion, but that did not happen.
The four iPhones in the iPhone 12 series have a 60Hz refresh rate and 120Hz touch input.
The high-refresh-rate display screens are surely coming to the iPhones, however, we will have to wait at least another year.
Apple promises 620 nits of typical brightness on the iPhone 12 screen and 800 nits of peak brightness. The minimum brightness is extremely low at 1.9 nits.
The display screen of the iPhone 12 offers excellent color accuracy and it fully supports DCI-P3, and it automatically switches to this gamma when DCI-P3 content is sent to the display screen.
The consistency of the screen accuracy is maintained across all brightness levels, even at the lowest point of 1.9 nits.
The iPhone 12 has 5G capabilities, however, you can only take advantage of this if there are 5G services provided in your neighborhood.
Even if you have a 5G provider in your area you will not be able to take full advantage of the iPhone’s 5G capability due to the fact that 5G is relatively new and the 5G infrastructure is still being developed.
5G consumes more of your battery’s resources than 4G, Apple’s solution to this is a new mode called smart data mode when this mode is enabled the iPhone will decide when it’s appropriate to use 5G and when it isn’t.
So when you’re in an area where 4G is present, you will be on 4G speeds and everything will work just fine.
When you’re in a 5G area and you’re multi-tasking on your iPhone, the iPhone will automatically switch to 5G.
However, if you’re in a 5G area but you’re not doing anything that benefits from 5G, your iPhone will switch to 4G to conserve the battery but you will still see the 5G indicator to let you know that you’re in a 5G area.
The iPhone 12 comes equipped with a dual-camera setup at the back of the iPhone which consists of a 12MP Ultra-Wide camera with 1.4µm pixels and an f/2.4 aperture which has a 13 mm focal length and a 120-degree field of view.
The other camera is a 12MP Wide-Angle camera which has an f/1.6 aperture a 26mm focal length, optical image stabilization, and 100% Focus Pixels.
At the front of the iPhone, there’s another Dual-Camera setup which consists of 2 12MP cameras with a 1/3.6-inch sensor with an f/2.2 aperture.
When taking photos in a well-lit setting the photo quality of the photos taken with the iPhone 12 are decent, the noise is low and the colors look extremely natural.
For people who enjoy taking photos in a darker setting, there’s Night Mode, this mode is supported on the primary cameras as well as the selfie cameras.
Night Mode on the iPhone 12 takes good photos with lots of details in a darker setting.
However, on the iPhone 12 Pro, this feature works better because there’s a 2x zoom feature which gives you the ability to capture great photos that you cannot get with the digital zoom that’s available on the iPhone 12.
Night Mode has long exposure (slow shutter speed) so this mode does not work well if you’re trying to capture a moving subject.
On the iPhone 12, you can record 4K videos at 24, 30, or 60fps, you also have the ability to encode 4K Dolby Vision HDR video up to 30fps for a wider dynamic range as well as an improved viewing experience.
The iPhone 12 shoots 4K video at 24, 30, or 60 frames per second, and can encode 4K Dolby Vision HDR video at up to 30 fps for a wider dynamic range and an improved viewing experience on displays that support the standard.
The HDR video is great, it has deeper shadows, brighter brights, and the overall quality is great.
The iPhone 12 comes equipped with Apple’s new a14 Bionic processor inside, this is the first five-nanometer processor that’s ever been placed in an iPhone.
Thus making the CPU and GPU more powerful, they all work in conjunction with 4GB of RAM which makes the iPhone 12 a powerful phone.
This makes the iPhone 12 very fast and responsive and it’s most noticeable when you’re multitasking.
However, when you compare the speed and responsiveness of last year’s iPhone 11 to that of this year’s iPhone 12, it’s not significantly faster.
The battery life on the iPhone 12 is decent, the battery lasts for roughly 1 day of moderate use. This iPhone comes equipped with a 2,815mAh battery which is approximately 10% smaller than the battery inside last year’s iPhone 11.
The battery life on the iPhone 11 and 12 are about the same this is due to the new power-efficient A14 Bionic chip.
However, the display screen is slightly bigger and the resolution is higher on this year’s iPhone, so if you take these 2 factors into consideration the battery life on the iPhone 12 is good but the battery life on the iPhone 12Pro is better.
My Final Thought:
If you’re due for an upgrade, there are a number of reasons why you should consider getting this iPhone. The iPhone 12 has 5G capabilities, it’s nicely designed, it has a beautiful display screen, and the Night Mode feature is second to none.
The iPhone 12 is one of four iPhones in the iPhone 12 series, the iPhone 12 is a decent phone but it has its strengths and weaknesses like every other phone.
However, if you’re unhappy with the features of this phone and you would like a more powerful phone, you should consider getting one of the iPhone 12 Pro models.
