Google Pixel 4 XL Review – Some Great New Features

Motion Sense:

The Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL comes with a new feature called Motion Sense, this feature uses a radar sensor which is housed in the bezel above the display screen and it uses Google’s Project Soli to recognize different gestures.

The Motion Sense feature gives you the ability to perform certain tasks without touching the phone by using various hand gestures.

For example, if you’re about a foot and a half away you can wave your hand halfway across the Soli sensor to dismiss an incoming call or to snooze alarms.

You can also control music playback on various apps by using hand gestures. It will take a little practice to become proficient at performing these gestures but the learning curve isn’t steep.

However, this is an extremely convenient feature that most Pixel 4 XL users will enjoy having on the phone.

This feature is new so it’s a bit limited in what it offers, hopefully, Google can get more third-party apps to support Motion Sense in the near future.

The fingerprint scanner has been removed from the phone. Nevertheless, the Motion Sense feature gives you the ability to unlock the phone without touching it.

When the phone’s display screen is asleep, Motion Sense has the ability to detect when you’re close to it.

This will awaken the display screen then you can quickly unlock it via the face unlock feature.

You can unlock the Pixel 4 XL with the face unlock feature even when the phone is in landscape orientation.

This feature is extremely fast and you do not have to swipe to unlock the phone, this is extremely convenient.

However, you can also unlock the phone via the face unlock feature even when your eyes are closed.

That’s bad because someone can unlock your phone while you’re asleep. The good news is, Google knows about this problem and they are currently trying to find a solution.

Performance & Battery Life:

The Pixel 4 XL comes equipped with 6GB of RAM, 64GB – 128GB of internal storage, and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor.

As a result of this, the Pixel 4 XL is a very fast and responsive phone. It’s not the fastest phone on the market, nevertheless, it provides a great user-experience when multi-tasking and it will not slow down.

When it comes to battery life, this is one area where the Pixel phones do not perform up to par with the rest of the premium phones on the market.

The Pixel 4 XL has better battery life than the Pixel 4 but the battery life isn’t great on the Pixel 4 XL. The Pixel 4 XL has a 3,700 mAh battery which will last for almost one full day of moderate usage.

The battery life on this phone could have been better, nevertheless. This phone comes with an 18-watt fast charger which is included in the box.

You can charge the Pixel 4 XL from 0 to 100% in 1.5 hours via the 18-watt fast charger. This phone also supports wireless charging.

However, you will have to purchase a charger that compatible with Qi standards that also supports the Extended Power Profile standard.

The Pixel 4 XL comes equipped with the Android 10 operating system and it has some great new features such as Dark Mode and Live Caption.

The Live Caption feature gives you the ability to insert closed captioning on any video that you watch on your phone.

Whether you’re watching a movie or a video you shot with the phone, you will have the ability to turn on Live Caption.

You can control the placement of the caption box on the display screen by tapping it and dragging it.

This is a great feature that gives you the ability to watch videos/movies without disturbing people around you.

Live Caption uses more of your battery’s resources so your battery will drain at a faster rate when it’s turned on, so you probably shouldn’t keep it on all the time.

The Pixel 4 XL has a new Recorder app that’s more advanced than any other Recorder apps that we’ve seen thus far.

This app has the ability to record and transcribe video simultaneously in real-time without an internet connection. All the processing takes place within the phone, this is amazing.

As a result of machine learning the phone can identify specific words and sounds and it gives you the ability to use the app’s built-in search feature to find specific words within the transcript.

The Recorder app produces a relatively accurate transcript. However, it struggles with punctuation and it has a hard time distinguishing when one sentence ends and another sentence begins.

If you record a conversation between two or more people, the Recorder cannot distinguish between the different voices.

So the text in the transcript from this conversation will appear together. This feature works great for recording lectures but it doesn’t work as well for recording conversations.

The Google Assistant has been improved, it does a better job understanding things contextually and a better job when responding to a string of commands and questions.

You can tell the Google Assistant how long you would like activity data to remain associated with your Google account.

You also have the ability to delete all the data with a voice command if you prefer to do so.

With the previous Pixel phones, you can store all your photos and videos that were shot with the phone on Google’s servers at their original quality for free until 1/31/2022.

However, this perk didn’t make it to the Pixel 4 XL. Nevertheless, with the Pixel 4 XL, you will get faster updates and you will also have access to the latest version of Android until 2022.

At the moment, Google is the only Android manufacturer that offers this type of support for their phones.

My Final Thought:

The Pixel 4 XL is the best Google phone of the year it has a bigger display screen and a longer battery life than its smaller sibling.

I was a bit disappointed by the absence of an ultra-wide-angle camera on this phone but that’s not a deal-breaker by any means because the Pixel 4 XL is one of the best camera phones on the market.

The Pixel 4 XL has some great new features such as Motion Sense, Live Caption, and Face Unlock. However, the battery life could have been better and the display screen could have been brighter.

Nevertheless, if you’re looking for a big powerful phone with some nice features you should consider the Google Pixel 4 XL.
