Cell phone popularity is at an all-time high, this is due to all the features and functionalities that a modern-day cell phone possesses. However, there aren’t too many people who think about the security of their cell phone calls. Are cell phone calls secure?
They are not as secure as you may think, there are a few security issues that you should be concerned about and I will tell you what they are.
Eavesdropping On Cell Phone Calls:
Even though it may be illegal to monitor and listen to someone else’s phone calls there are sneaky criminals who use shady tactics to do this. Listening to someone else’s private phone calls can be accomplished via a digital data interpreter or a radio frequency scanner.
By using either of these devices a person will be able to listen to your entire conversation. If you reveal any kind of private information i.e. passwords, bank account information, that information may be written down and used at a later time.
What Is Cell Phone Cloning?
The ability to steal someone’s cell phone service without actually having their phone is referred to as cloning. Someone can do this by acquiring a cell phone’s mobile identification number (MIN) and the electronic serial number (ESN) while the phone is being used.
After this information has been acquired the person will then program this info into another cell phone. This procedure makes it identical to the phone that it was stolen from.
Once this has been done, phone calls can be made from the cloned phone and the charges will appear on the phone bill of the original phone.
So the person with the cloned phone will be stealing phone service from the person with the original phone.
Using A Microphone Via Maintenance Mode:
The person with the cloned phone can place a call to the original phone and set it to maintenance mode. This will create a one-way connection to the original phone which will turn it into a microphone.
This will give the person with the cloned phone the ability to listen to everything within close proximity to the original phone.
There will be no way for the person with the original phone to know that this has been done until they try to make a call and they realize that they must restart the phone before they can make the call.
How To Secure A Cell Phone:
To secure your phone and reduce your chances of someone cloning it, you should do the following things:
- You should never leave your phone unattended.
- Turn your phone off when you’re not using it.
- Avoid using your phone within several miles of a mall, an airport or any crowded location.
You must know that people who are trying to clone your phone will usually scan crowded places when looking for unprotected signals.
Some cell phone service providers give personal identification numbers (PIN) to their customers. This requires the person to enter their pin number every time before making a call.
Doing these things may be extremely inconvenient, however, these are the best ways to protect your cell phone from being cloned.
